The compound of silicon and nitrogen (Si3N4) is characterized by interesting properties which make them for industrial applications for suitable material. The high strength and low thermal expansion coefficient of the material for thermal alternating stresses is excellent.
Also Si3N4 itself can still transmit at temperatures around 1000 ° C very large forces and is therefore very suitable for soldering and welding applications.
The extreme hardness and excellent surface properties make silicon the preferred material for tools such as in sheet metal forming.
